This week, the boys rewatch “Sicario”, the Roger Deakins- I mean, Taylor Sheridan- I mean, Denis Villeneuve film that took 2015 by storm. The random year generator spun 2015, so we give you the context of the film year (5 Billion-dollar movies!), world events (Remember the FIFA scandal?), and then discuss what makes this film stand out above the rest of its peers. At the end of the episode, Jeff and John give their thoughts on Alfonso Cuaron’s “Disclaimer” on AppleTV+.

After the boys get through their mini-reviews, they discuss “Mrs. Miniver”, the 1942 Oscar-winning film that sold a whole lot of war bonds. Set outside London but filmed in the USA for obvious reasons, we discuss this William Wyler masterpiece and whether or not the propagating was too much!

"AI: Artificial Intelligence": Films of 2001
Tuesday Nov 05, 2024
Tuesday Nov 05, 2024
This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he’d never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did Jeff land? I wonder if he liked it better than he likes subway poetry. Grab a beer and listen along.

"Goodrich" mini-review + "North By Northwest": Films of 1959
Tuesday Oct 29, 2024
Tuesday Oct 29, 2024
This week, after John briefly discusses "Goodrich", the new Michael Keaton picture written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, the boys take on another Hitchcock classic to highlight the film year 1959. Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. You’ll have to listen to see if the boys think this film sits on the Mount Rushmore (get it?) of Hitchcock’s classics.

"Chinatown": Films of 1974
Monday Oct 21, 2024
Monday Oct 21, 2024
The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. Is it coincidental that Nixon’s public demise and unequivocal exoneration came the year Chinatown cites bureaucratic corruption???

21 Grams: Films of 2003+ "The Outrun" super mini review
Monday Oct 07, 2024
Monday Oct 07, 2024
Two of the three dive into this high drama from the early 2000's. Jeff is away but somehow still appears in the episode and doesn't sound the least bit like he's broadcasting from a phone in a toilet cubicle in Times Square (Don't try and find them, they don't exist) thanks to our AI audio algorithm knowing what he sounds like and his volume level. We discuss acting performances, daring editing choices and the cinematography of the film, and have a lengthy extra discussion about how streaming "TV show" budgets are out of control.

This week, the boys head back to 1940 to discuss “The Shop Around The Corner” after setting up the film year and discussing some world events- Nylon stockings were invented this year! After Jeff gives his mini-review of “Saturday Night”, the Jason Reitman film about the making of the first episode of “Saturday Night Live”, the boys discuss the Ernst Lubitsch film, adapted from the 1936/1937 play Hungarian Perfumerie, which also inspired the musical She Loves Me and the film “You’ve Got Mail”. We also drink a lot, Dave gets mad at Thrifty, and Jeff confuses Superman and Captain America like a Beta.

John, with full CoVid immunity, also caught ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ and gave us a spoiler-free mini-review.

The boys get romantic in 1955 NYC, where a simple middle-aged 34-year-old butcher named Marty caves to societal pressures and calls up a lady. We discuss! The random year generator spun in 1955, and we decided to delve into Paddy Chayefsky’s pen when he wrote “Marty”, the Oscar and Palme D’Or-winning 90-minute slice of dramatic life film starring with Ernest Borgnine in his Academy Award-winning performance. Dave is Australian, so he was drinking Fosters, and John gave us a mini-review of Alien: Romulus-going, now that his Covid passed his 5-day window.

'Brief Encounter': Films of 1945
Monday Aug 19, 2024
Monday Aug 19, 2024
The boys head back to 1945 England, where not much was happening (just kidding), to watch David Lean’s 'Brief Encounter' as part of our Random Year Generator series. David Lean’s first three films, including this one, were all Noël Coward adaptations! Didn’t expect that from the guy who gave us 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. We’re a drinking podcast trying to keep it positive, but somehow, Dave got buzzed over 25 times talking about this romantic drama rated the #2 Greatest British Film of all time by the British Film Institute! Grab a beer and listen along.

'Leaving Las Vegas': Films of 1995 + 'Borderlands' mini-review
Monday Aug 12, 2024
Monday Aug 12, 2024
The boys head to 1995 to discuss ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, Nicolas Cage’s Oscar-winning role, and whether or not there can be such a thing as too much jazz scatting in a film score. We set the scene, give you some context of world and film news from 1995, and sink our teeth into a productive conversation about this emotional film about an alcoholic (Cage) and his prostitute friend, Elizabeth Shue. Dave opens the episode with a mini-review of ‘Borderlands,’ the Eli Roth video game series adaptation that critics and audiences shunned, despite starring huge names: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis!

Monday Jul 29, 2024
This week on the pod, Dave gives a brief, spoiler-free recommendation of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ before the boys take a trip back to 2018 to discuss David Robert Mitchell’s ‘Under the Silver Lake’. The random year generator spun 2018, and the boys didn’t want to discuss the big money-makers of the year. Screw them. We’ll give you some context of what was going on that year in film, culture, and news, and we also drink a lot during the episode, so crack open a beer and listen along!

Monday Jul 22, 2024
Monday Jul 22, 2024
This week, the boys head up the Cahulawassee River to discuss ‘Deliverance’: Films of 1972. Our random year generator spun a year we’ve previously crossed to discuss ‘The Godfather’ and ‘A Clockwork Orange,’ and the three of us had never seen it before! Maybe it’s people's reaction when you say, “I’m going to watch ‘Deliverance,’ want to come over?” While we’re a joke-flinging, arrow-shooting, beer-drinking podcast, we promise to give a thoughtful and insightful reflection of ‘Deliverance’ that other podcasts can’t deliver! Dave also opens with a mini-review of ’Twisters’ in IMAX! Grab a beer and push play.

This week, the boys grab a beer and head back to 2010 to cover Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Incendies’, now streaming on Prime, and discuss what else was happening in that surprising year. From ‘The Social Network’ to ‘The King’s Speech’ to a whole lot of profitable animated films, led by the $1 Billion-grossing ‘Toy Story 3’, as well as some other big-budget films like ‘Inception’ and sequels to Harry Potter, Twilight, and Shrek. The boys grab a beer and head to Shinbone, the fictional town in a western US territory in the old West, to discuss ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’: Films of 1962. The newest edition to our “Random Year Generator” was tons of fun to discuss, making jabs at John Ford’s notoriously fiery antics, John Wayne and Jimmy Stewarts contrasting acting styles, Lee Marvin’s screen presence, and how there were that many steaks in the old west- how were any cows left! Monday Jun 10, 2024
Monday Jun 10, 2024
This week, Jeff and Dave discuss the Denzel Washington cult neo-classic ‘Fallen’: Films of 1998 as part of our “Random Year Generator” series. I already hate myself for saying “neo-classic”. But it is… it’s been almost 30 years! And it’s a cult classic because it’s not “Se7en” or something, but it’s so fun. Dave says it’s a perfect movie. A perfect movie!! Wow, Dave. Since we are a drinking podcast, we get the drinks flowing with a few gripes about society, showing up to the theater on time, and the new ‘Star Wars: Acolyte’. After that, we discuss the film year 1998—the box office, awards, culture, and some world events before discussing our film. What did we remember, what did we forget, and how did we feel about this rewatch? Grab a beer and join us!

Monday May 20, 2024
This week, Jeff and Dave discuss ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’: Films of 1977 as part of our “Random Year Generator” series, chosen by our random year generator. Since we are a drinking podcast, we get the drinks flowing with a few gripes about dance teachers vs. stage managers, therapy commercials, and how to exist in society. After that, we discuss the film year 1977—the box office, awards, culture, and some world events before discussing our film. What did we remember, what did we forget, and how did we feel about this rewatch? Grab a beer and join us!

This week Jeff and Dave discuss ‘High Noon’ in our “Films of 1952” segment, part of our random year generator series! Having never seen this Stanley Kramer/Fred Zinnemann/Carl Foreman CLASSIC, we figured it was time to regain our credibility by watching one of American history’s most inspiring westerns- and films. Even though Dave is Australian. He’s from the Outback and waved at Queen Elizabeth II once, and she was coronated in 1952, so I suppose he has a specific niche expertise. Jeff also offers a spoiler-free, feeling-first mini-review of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” after Dave discusses the confusion of the Sony/Apollo/Paramount+ news!

'Chopper': Films of 2000
Tuesday Apr 30, 2024
Tuesday Apr 30, 2024
This week, our Queensland/Victoria bloke Dave says g’day, cracks open some tinnies and Tim Tams, and takes us to the Melbourne Bojangles as seen in ‘Chopper’, our featured conversation for our ‘Films of 2000’ segment. We’ll give you some context, we’ll talk about where Eric Bana rose in Australian television before Hollywood saw this film and begged him to get shredded and work on American and British accents. Writer/Director Andrew Dominik (Blonde, Killing Them Softly, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) lived with Mark “Chopper” Reade to prepare the script for filming, and holy cow. We also gripe about youth sports. Grab some Cutter beer and listen to our convo!

Akira Kurosawa's 'High and Low': Films of 1963 featuring DASEIN

Monday Apr 22, 2024
Oh boy. Our artist in residence, Dasein, the “Mr. Gondo” of music making, showed up for Kurosawa and got some crazy banter about Hemorrhoids, automatic doors, our most intoxicated episodes, and finally High and Low’, Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 masterpiece. After a string of period pieces, almost all of which starred or co-starred Toshirô Mifune, Kurosawa adapts the 1963 American serial crime novel ‘King’s Ranson’, which may very well be the absolute GOAT of detective films. Yeah, including the noirs, film nerds! Go watch ‘Memories of Murder’, ‘Se7en’, and ‘Zodiac’, and then come back and listen to our episodes from a few years ago. We’ll give some context of the 1963 film year, rank our favorite Kurosawas, and drink some beer while loving movies!
