Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder (2003): What Else Have They Done?

This marks the first episode of our new series, What Else Have They Done? For avid Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer) fans, and followers of Quentin Tarantino's infamous movie lists, this film is a legendary exemplar of the murder mystery genre, and it's currently streaming on Hulu. John's cinematography teacher and fancy film school unknowingly inspired this selection. If you haven't seen it before, holy crap, get ready to be rocked. Set in a rural South Korean town, inspired by the 1986-1991 Hwaseong Serial Murders, Song Kang-ho (Parasite) leads a team of investigators and detectives who are driven crazy as they try to solve a series of seemingly unsolvable rape-murders.

Breaking (2022): New Movie Discussion

This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Breaking, the new film, based on a true story, starring John Boyega as a US Marine veteran who demands the VA pay him his disability checks, which have been held up by bureaucratic crap that the US military doesn't want to confront ever, ever. Therefore, Boyega's Brian Brown-Easley makes a bold decision to make his situation known at the risk of his own life. We discussed the incredibly important content of the film as compared to the final product, which was directed by relative new-comer to feature film directing, Abi Damaris Corbin, who co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah. Boyega also co-exec produced, and the supporting cast is led by Michael K. Williams in one of his final performances. RIP! Composed by frequent Jordan Peele collaborator Michael Abels, the film was also co-produced by Euphoria's Sam Levinson.

Emily the Criminal (2022): New Movie Discussion

Bullet Train (2022): Beer + New Movie Discussion

This week Jeff, John & Dave discuss Bullet Train, which finally came to theaters after months of the exact same trailer appearing at the front of every single cinema release. This movie is directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2) and stars Brad Pitt, who's just trying to have as much fun in silly life as possible, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, Brian Tyree Henry, Logan Lerman, Zazie Beetz, Bad Bunny, and a few surprise cameos. On the whole, this movie is fun, f the critics who think it's 'smug' and let it to a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, grab some popcorn, watch with friends and loved ones, this is a fun action comedy with dramatic elements, Kung Fu influence and fighting sequences... just listen to our ep and hear us go through it!

The Gray Man (2022): New Movie Discussion with Beer

This week John, Dave & Jeff discuss The Gray Man, one of Netflix's biggest commitments of all time with a reported $200 million budget. Based on the 2009 novel of the same name, this project originally had Brad Pitt and James Gray attached, then Chris McQuarrie and Charlize Theron, it finally came to the Russo Brothers and the duo of Ryan Gosling and a wannabe Peter Sellers-esque, mustachioed Chris Evans. The cast is fleshed out by Alfre Woodard, Ana de Armas, and Billy Bob Thornton, and the script isn't fleshed out, at all. It's dead. But the movie was very fun, lots of action... so much action... so we gave it a watch, drank beer, and talked about it!

Gattaca (1997): Should Have Seen That By Now

This week Jeff makes Dave & John re-watch 90s Sci-Fi thriller (?) Gattaca since he had never seen it! Lots of beer drinking, too. We had consumed a bunch before we even started recording. Anyway, it's on Netflix and it gave us both Jude Law and Maya Hawke, plus it's so 90s. What a premise! Ethan Hawke pretends to be Jude Law so that he can maybe go to space some day. There's something about swimming against his brother, I think the line "I never saved anything for the swim back" that, you, didn't quite have the sentimental impact as "They called me Mr. Glass!", or something. Hell of a cast. Andrew Niccol wrote/directed.

NOPE (2022): New Movie Discussion

John, Dave & Jeff saw Nope, and we gave it three (or six?) thumbs up! We start spoiler free before getting into it, we have lots of questions and get into those as well, so tune in whether you loved the movie or didn't! One thing we can agree on, that is one tough, tough way to die. There's a shot of some death that is... actually two different sequences featuring multiple deaths that are really tough ways to go. So if the tension wasn't enough to scare you, at least agree that those deaths were tough. We cover lots of ground, but it looks like Jordan Peele is back after splitting his audience with his sophomore entry, US. Seeing this in IMAX was awesome and highly recommended. And shout-out to Keke Palmer! Steals the show.

The Black Phone (2022): New Movie Discussion

This movie has that 70s-era slow burn horror feel to match the setting- 1978 in North Denver- and enough suspense and jump scares to possibly make this a rewatch-able flick! Fantastic cast, fantastic crew, go check this out. Screw those hoity-toity critics, who are mostly warm on the film but with a little condescension. This is definitely worth it. We discuss. Mark Rylance, perhaps the greatest living English-speaking actor, paired with a luminous Sally Hawkins & antagonized by a yuppy Rhys Ifans, star in this Craig Roberts film about a crane driver (operator) in a working class coastal English town who decides to take up golf by entering The British Open in 1976. Based on a true story! Script by Simon Farnaby who co-wrote Paddington 2, so you know it’s well a jolly well done job!

Crimes of the Future (2022): New Movie Discussion

Men (2022): New Film Discussion

This week on the show, Dave left John and Jeff to record, edit and mix an episode with minimal professional experience, and we did! We did it. Dave's rediscovering his love for Cutter beer, Tim Tams, and Australian courtesy in the land of his youth. We discuss the horror genre-subverting film Men (2022), writer/director Alex Garland's third feature (Ex Machina, Annihilation, the Hulu limited series Devs). Garland made some bold choices to explore a woman's (Jessie Buckley) grief while she escapes her hometown of London for the Cotswolds in the English countryside, where she finds herself surrounded by men (Rory Kinnear) who are not only capable, but seemingly intent on threatening her while handing her the blame for their lust. We discuss the film's poetry, allegory, and what can happen when a writer/director makes a challenging film exactly the way they intend, without studio interference.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022): New Movie Discussion

Sam Raimi is back to superheroes, there are some horror elements going on, reviews seem pretty good, there's a ton of excitement around this film, we helped crash the AMC ticketing service, buying in advance, renting Spider-Man: No Way Home the Thursday night before release. The Northman (2022): New Movie Discussion

Sjón and Robert Eggers wrote The Northman together, and it was made into a major motion picture, Robert Eggers third feature as director. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and now this, his biggest budget yet at $60 million. We discuss. What's your favorite North myth? Any Scandinavian friends have comments about the authenticity? It was well shot and staged out there in Iceland, which is apparently a very windy and cloudy place out in the middle of the Atlantic. Oh, and shout-out to Queensland, Australia. You're by far our favorite state. Brisbane is the sht. Our co-host Dave is from somewhere in you. I was going to ask him but my audio got messed up somehow so I had to use my backup, like old times. And it's late.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - New Movie Discussion & Review

With Jeff missing and last seen heading towards the Canadian border with a trunk full of things that he swore were not toys ordered from the dark web, we dive into the new Fantastic Beasts movie with special guest host Chris Hurte, assistant editor from The Mandolorian which makes him special enough to be on our show, but not special enough to receive an award on TV at the Oscars (yes we're still bitter).  As it turns out, Chris is a bit of a Harry Potter superfan which was super helpful for remembering character names.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022): New Movie Discussion, with a Sonic (2020) recap

Jeff and Dave saw Sonic 2 alone, separately, in NYC, and fkcing loved it. We both tidied up with Sonic 1, available on Paramount+ which we actually both have and pay for separately, and liked it but it let set Sonic 2 just get up and GO. Great Easter Eggs, great sendoff for Jim Carrey maybe, great fan service (...apparently. The families were going nuts. Moms and Dads- love seeing you hype!). We drink some beer and talk about our experience.

Morbius (2022): New Movie Discussion- We’re a POSITIVE Drinking Game Podcast!

This week on the pod Dave, Jeff, and John discuss Morbius, the 2022 Sony (Marvel) movie that the internet got giddy about hating on. We drink and try to keep it positive! Yes, there were re-shoots and delays and Spider-Man was removed from the film (in case you hawkish-ly watch trailers), but the film is worth discussing with some nuance! Perhaps more believable nuance than Adria Arjona's Martine got but come on, people! Grab a beer and get ready for a conversation. Jared Leto, Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson, (it's all men, in case you haven't noticed...) Michael Keaton... is not in the movie but apparently after credit scenes count now and can earn you a top-5 imdb credit (see: Harry Styles & Patton Oswalt in Eternals). Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022): New Movie Discussion + Oscars takeaways

This week we cover The Daniels' film about... about a lot of stuff. International treasure Michelle Yeoh leads an incredible cast that includes Ke Quan, James Hong, Stephanie Hsu, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and Jamie Lee Goddamn Curtis. This movie has so much, it's so original, it's very inventive, and we're sorry we talked about the Oscars before this discussion because it deserved better than the 2022 Oscars as a lead-in.
