Thor: Love and Thunder (2022): New Movie Discussion

This week on the pod, John, Jeff & Dave welcome guest Chris Hurte (The Mandalorian asst. editor) to discuss Thor: Love and Thunder, and where Marvel is heading in Phase 4. Thor is back! Jane is back! Loki is not, but Matt Damon is still giving him life on the Orpheum circuit! Christian Bale stars as Gorr the God Hunter, doing some strange shadow resurrecting and a lot of hours in the makeup chair, on a mission to kill Gods. And guess what? Thor... is a God! So that's a tough bind for him. Also, Jane is going by The Mighty Thor, and Thor is surprisingly OK with sharing the title. He's come a long way. And Valkyrie and Korg are back, as are some screaming goats. Fun.

The Black Phone (2022): New Movie Discussion

This week on the pod Jeff, John & Dave say F you to the partisan, hypocritical, power hungry, regressive, contradictory Supreme Court by discussing a really fun genre film! This movie has that 70s-era slow burn horror feel to match the setting- 1978 in North Denver- and enough suspense and jump scares to possibly make this a rewatch-able flick! Fantastic cast, fantastic crew, go check this out. Screw those hoity-toity critics, who are mostly warm on the film but with a little condescension. This is definitely worth it. We discuss. It's by Joe Hill & the team that brought you Doctor Strange and Sinister. And the director liked one of Dave's tweets! So, see it.

The Phantom of the Open (2022): New Movie Discussion

Jeff, John and Dave celebrate the renaissance of golf with a giant F-U to the LIV golf tour. Just kidding! We talk about an incredibly charming movie that is more character study than sports movie, yet with all the perks of both. Mark Rylance, perhaps the greatest living English-speaking actor, paired with a luminous Sally Hawkins & antagonized by a yuppy Rhys Ifans, star in this Craig Roberts film about a crane driver (operator) in a working class coastal English town who decides to take up golf by entering The British Open in 1976. Based on a true story! Script by Simon Farnaby who co-wrote Paddington 2, so you know it’s well a jolly well done job!

Men (2022): New Film Discussion

This week on the show, Dave left John and Jeff to record, edit and mix an episode with minimal professional experience, and we did! We did it. Dave's rediscovering his love for Cutter beer, Tim Tams, and Australian courtesy in the land of his youth. We discuss the horror genre-subverting film Men (2022), writer/director Alex Garland's third feature (Ex Machina, Annihilation, the Hulu limited series Devs). Garland made some bold choices to explore a woman's (Jessie Buckley) grief while she escapes her hometown of London for the Cotswolds in the English countryside, where she finds herself surrounded by men (Rory Kinnear) who are not only capable, but seemingly intent on threatening her while handing her the blame for their lust. We discuss the film's poetry, allegory, and what can happen when a writer/director makes a challenging film exactly the way they intend, without studio interference.

The Northman (2022): New Movie Discussion

Sjón and Robert Eggers wrote The Northman together, and it was made into a major motion picture, Robert Eggers third feature as director. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and now this, his biggest budget yet at $60 million. We discuss. What's your favorite North myth? Any Scandinavian friends have comments about the authenticity? Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022): New Movie Discussion, with a Sonic (2020) recap

Jeff and Dave saw Sonic 2 alone, separately, in NYC, and fkcing loved it. We both tidied up with Sonic 1, available on Paramount+ which we actually both have and pay for separately, and liked it but it let set Sonic 2 just get up and GO. Morbius (2022): New Movie Discussion- We’re a POSITIVE Drinking Game Podcast!

Oscars Predictions 2022: Our Picks vs. Vegas Picks

CODA (2021): New Movie Review & Discussion, also Oscars 2022

Dave and Jeff got drunk and watched CODA, now a front-runner for at least one Oscars category, and we really really liked it, so we got drunk to talk about it. If we knew how touched we'd be during the one movie we snuggled to watch together, we would have picked a different one. The King’s Man (2021): New Movie Review & Discussion

This week on the pod Jeff, John and Dave get into what was going on with The King's Man, a prequel to the first two Kingsman films from 2014 and 2017, this time starring Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew Goode, Daniel Brühl, and Charles Dance. The movie is... trying to be both dark and fun at the same time, has it's moments, really great for goat actors and goat vengeance, but we get into it! It's available now on HBOMax and Hulu.

Uncharted (2022): New Movie Discussion. This Movie Was Fun!

After Jeff goes on a 2-minute unnecessary Oscars rant, Dave & John save the show by pivoting to Uncharted, the new franchise starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Directed by Ruben Fleischer.  This movie was a little stupid and a lot of fun. Based on the video game franchise, this is also going to be a franchise, Tom Holland has a different American accent... it's just good fun.

Nightmare Alley (2021): Should Have Seen That By Now

This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley, starring and produced by Bradley Cooper, co-starring Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn, and Holt McCallany. The film is a noir, sort of, and a mystery thriller horror movie, we think, and it's nominated for Oscars! It's also currently streaming on both HBO Max and Hulu. The film has mixed reviews and is kind of confusing to pin down. We discuss.

Antlers (2021): Should Have Seen That By Now

This week Jeff, John & Dave talk about Antlers, now available on HBOMax, directed by Scott Cooper, who is a FORCE. Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Hostiles, Black Mass, now this. Actors love him (he was one of them), Guillermo del Toro loves him so much he essentially forced Cooper to make this film, stepping up as producer. Scary antler stuff, lore, an Oregon meth town in the woods, Kerri Russell, Jesse Plemmons, a child actor who's insanely good... this movie is really great. Give Scott Cooper your love. F the critics. Turn the lights off and press play.

Being The Ricardos: New Movie Discussion

This week on the pod, Aaron Sorkin lives in Jeff's head rent free. Even still, Dave & Jeff found lots they agree on with this new Amazon Prime original, starring Nicole Kidman & Javier Bardem as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively. Aaron made some choices, for sure, but ultimately, this is a really watchable movie that is smart without being as smug as it could have been, funny without being a slapstick or knock-off, and the drummer from Birdman may or may not have scored parts of this movie, it's hard to know for sure. Shout-out to J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jake Lacy, Clark Gregg, and a whole lot of "They look familiar" actors. Also, Jeff Cronenweth, the DP. Way to crush, my man!
