Men (2022): New Film Discussion
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
This week on the show, Dave left John and Jeff to record, edit and mix an episode with minimal professional experience, and we did! We did it. Dave's rediscovering his love for Cutter beer, Tim Tams, and Australian courtesy in the land of his youth. We discuss the horror genre-subverting film Men (2022), writer/director Alex Garland's third feature (Ex Machina, Annihilation, the Hulu limited series Devs). Garland made some bold choices to explore a woman's (Jessie Buckley) grief while she escapes her hometown of London for the Cotswolds in the English countryside, where she finds herself surrounded by men (Rory Kinnear) who are not only capable, but seemingly intent on threatening her while handing her the blame for their lust. We discuss the film's poetry, allegory, and what can happen when a writer/director makes a challenging film exactly the way they intend, without studio interference.
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch again but with an extra eye, Benedict Wong, always crazy to see two Benedicts in the top billing, an un-dead Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg has a scene, some other cameos that we won't name, and newcomer Xochitl Gomez.

Paddington 2: Definitely Should Have Seen It By Now
Tuesday May 17, 2022
Tuesday May 17, 2022
Dave & Jeff whip out the beer and discuss Paddington 2. This film was recently hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time by ranking websites (Rotten Tomatoes) friends (our friend Ryan), and other films (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: "It Made Me Want To Be A Better Man"). Is it that good? Yes. The answer is yes. Holy hell, yes. We discuss.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022): New Movie Discussion
Tuesday May 10, 2022
Tuesday May 10, 2022
So, let's talk about this movie. Sam Raimi is back to superheroes, there are some horror elements going on, reviews seem pretty good, there's a ton of excitement around this film, we helped crash the AMC ticketing service, buying in advance, renting Spider-Man: No Way Home the Thursday night before release. Is it worth getting picky over this movie? We break it down. Let us know what you think. We respond on the socials.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - Movie Review and Discussion
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Tuesday May 03, 2022
Dave & John attempt a discussion that leads to the discovery that Nick Cage's new film is almost unreviewable and should just be experienced. We then delve into other hard hitting scenarios like where can we put Nick Cage in the MCU (John adamantly refusing to acknowledge the existence of Ghost Rider) Finally, we wrap it up with some What You Been Watching before all hosts attempt Australian accents... one almost succeeds...

The Northman (2022): New Movie Discussion
Tuesday Apr 26, 2022
Tuesday Apr 26, 2022
Sjón and Robert Eggers wrote The Northman together, and it was made into a major motion picture, Robert Eggers third feature as director. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and now this, his biggest budget yet at $60 million. We discuss. What's your favorite North myth? Any Scandinavian friends have comments about the authenticity? It was well shot and staged out there in Iceland, which is apparently a very windy and cloudy place out in the middle of the Atlantic. Oh, and shout-out to Queensland, Australia. You're by far our favorite state. Brisbane is the sht. Our co-host Dave is from somewhere in you. I was going to ask him but my audio got messed up somehow so I had to use my backup, like old times. And it's late.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - New Movie Discussion & Review
Tuesday Apr 19, 2022
Tuesday Apr 19, 2022
With Jeff missing and last seen heading towards the Canadian border with a trunk full of things that he swore were not toys ordered from the dark web, we dive into the new Fantastic Beasts movie with special guest host Chris Hurte, assistant editor from The Mandolorian which makes him special enough to be on our show, but not special enough to receive an award on TV at the Oscars (yes we're still bitter). As it turns out, Chris is a bit of a Harry Potter superfan which was super helpful for remembering character names.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022): New Movie Discussion, with a Sonic (2020) recap
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
Jeff and Dave saw Sonic 2 alone, separately, in NYC, and fkcing loved it. We both tidied up with Sonic 1, available on Paramount+ which we actually both have and pay for separately, and liked it but it let set Sonic 2 just get up and GO. Great Easter Eggs, great sendoff for Jim Carrey maybe, great fan service (...apparently. The families were going nuts. Moms and Dads- love seeing you hype!). Morbius (2022): New Movie Discussion- We’re a POSITIVE Drinking Game Podcast!
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
This week on the pod Dave, Jeff, and John discuss Morbius, the 2022 Sony (Marvel) movie that the internet got giddy about hating on. We drink and try to keep it positive! Yes, there were re-shoots and delays and Spider-Man was removed from the film (in case you hawkish-ly watch trailers), but the film is worth discussing with some nuance! Perhaps more believable nuance than Adria Arjona's Martine got but come on, people! Grab a beer and get ready for a conversation. Jared Leto, Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson, (it's all men, in case you haven't noticed...) Michael Keaton... is not in the movie but apparently after credit scenes count now and can earn you a top-5 imdb credit (see: Harry Styles & Patton Oswalt in Eternals). Directed by Daniel Espinosa, written by Burk Sharpless & Matt Sazama. Thanks, Queensland, Australia!

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022): New Movie Discussion + Oscars takeaways
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
This week we cover The Daniels' film about... about a lot of stuff. International treasure Michelle Yeoh leads an incredible cast that includes Ke Quan, James Hong, Stephanie Hsu, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and Jamie Lee Goddamn Curtis. This movie has so much, it's so original, it's very inventive, and we're sorry we talked about the Oscars before this discussion because it deserved better than the 2022 Oscars as a lead-in. It might not be in release yet, so check your local theater schedule and see it when you can! Also, thank you, Queensland, Australia, and the Hawaii film community for your continued support.

Oscars Predictions 2022: Our Picks vs. Vegas Picks
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
Want a fun 2022 Oscars? Dave and Jeff offer up some story lines and see if our Should Win/Will Win predictions are in line with Las Vegas' betting odds. We are not sponsored by any of the 20 gambling sites that hired a celebrity and advertised during the Super Bowl. We would love to be sponsored by them. But we're not. All we have is a beer sponsor. To our Queensland, Australia listeners, cheers, have a fun early Oscars party to see if your Aussie Heiress Nicole Kidman wins another. Just please take her PSA out of AMC's pre-show. It's not her fault, it's theirs, but it's gone too far. They've had plenty of time to make a new one. Something about 3D glasses and popcorn, they usually have a weird roller coaster, some crap like that. Just stop telling me why I go to the movies. I go all the goddamn time. And when I'm watching a pre-show PSA at AMC, I'M ALREADY THERE! I MADE IT! I'M DOING IT! And I just sat through 20 minutes of trailers, the last thing I need is a reminder of what this advertisement rigamarole is preventing me from seeing! The movie that could have started by now!

The Adam Project: Movie Review and Discussion that gets weird....
Tuesday Mar 15, 2022
Tuesday Mar 15, 2022
Jeff is away, John is back so you know this episode is going to run a little long. We go in depth on The Adam Project starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell (Ryan Reynolds 2.0), Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner & Zoe Saldana. Directed by Shawn Levy who was responsible for Dave gushing like crazy about Free Guy on another podcast. This one has a similar effect, as Dave gushes around John's attempts to analyze and justify the time travel antics. We discuss Netflix a bit before touching on physics, a little bit of LSD and why corporations have skin filters on your internet searches. Like the title says... it gets weird.

Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
While John continues to find himself in college, Dave & Jeff discuss The Batman, Matt Reeve's new noir-inspired, comics-accurate take on the caped shadow dweller. Dave's from Australia- we love our Aussies! Shout-out to Queensland. Anyway, the shots, the cast, the DP, the score, the story, the look, the feel... this was incredible. Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Colin Freaking Farrell, Andy Serkis... this movie was the tits.

CODA (2021): New Movie Review & Discussion, also Oscars 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Dave and Jeff got drunk and watched CODA, now a front-runner for at least one Oscars category, and we really really liked it, so we got drunk to talk about it. If we knew how touched we'd be during the one movie we snuggled to watch together, we would have picked a different one. But we're happy we didn't pick a different one, because this was really really great. We discuss.

Friday Feb 25, 2022
Friday Feb 25, 2022
This week on the pod Jeff, John and Dave get into what was going on with The King's Man, a prequel to the first two Kingsman films from 2014 and 2017, this time starring Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew Goode, Daniel Brühl, and Charles Dance. The movie is... trying to be both dark and fun at the same time, has it's moments, really great for goat actors and goat vengeance, but we get into it! It's available now on HBOMax and Hulu.

Uncharted (2022): New Movie Discussion. This Movie Was Fun!
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
After Jeff goes on a 2-minute unnecessary Oscars rant, Dave & John save the show by pivoting to Uncharted, the new franchise starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Directed by Ruben Fleischer. This movie was a little stupid and a lot of fun. Based on the video game franchise, this is also going to be a franchise, Tom Holland has a different American accent... it's just good fun.

Nightmare Alley (2021): Should Have Seen That By Now
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
Tuesday Feb 15, 2022
This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley, starring and produced by Bradley Cooper, co-starring Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn, and Holt McCallany. The film is a noir, sort of, and a mystery thriller horror movie, we think, and it's nominated for Oscars! It's also currently streaming on both HBO Max and Hulu. The film has mixed reviews and is kind of confusing to pin down. We discuss.

Friday Feb 11, 2022
Friday Feb 11, 2022
This week Jeff, John & Dave talk about Antlers, now available on HBOMax, directed by Scott Cooper, who is a FORCE. Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Hostiles, Black Mass, now this. Actors love him (he was one of them), Guillermo del Toro loves him so much he essentially forced Cooper to make this film, stepping up as producer. Scary antler stuff, lore, an Oregon meth town in the woods, Kerri Russell, Jesse Plemmons, a child actor who's insanely good... this movie is really great. Give Scott Cooper your love. F the critics. Being The Ricardos: New Movie Discussion
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
This week on the pod, Aaron Sorkin lives in Jeff's head rent free. Even still, Dave & Jeff found lots they agree on with this new Amazon Prime original, starring Nicole Kidman & Javier Bardem as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively. Aaron made some choices, for sure, but ultimately, this is a really watchable movie that is smart without being as smug as it could have been, funny without being a slapstick or knock-off, and the drummer from Birdman may or may not have scored parts of this movie, it's hard to know for sure. Shout-out to J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jake Lacy, Clark Gregg, and a whole lot of "They look familiar" actors. Also, Jeff Cronenweth, the DP. Way to crush, my man!

A Clockwork Orange: Should Have Seen That By Now
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
This week on the pod, we discuss how Stanley Kubrick's autobiographical tale messes us up so much but we keep going back to Kubrick for more- more questions, more concerns for who he was as a person, more wondering if he ever paid his bills. One of our co-hosts, from Australia, had never seen the film. We discussed his initiation. That's what it feels like, right? Everyone who's seen this... we've all been through it. Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
This week on the pod we discuss The Power of the Dog, written and adapted by Jane Campion from the Thomas Savage novel of the same name. It's Benedict Cumberbath in a western, according to marketing. In the story line, they say stuff like: "Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling," and "He is a cowboy as raw as his hides." If you want to have a good watch of this film, keep your eye on Jesse Plemmons, Kirsten Dunst and Aussie Kodi Smit-McPhee, and pour one out for Bronco Henry. Tuesday Jan 04, 2022
This week on the pod Dave, Jeff & John discuss Don't Look Up, Adam McKay's Climate Change (and more) satire starring so many famous people I can only use one name/word per person: Leo, JLaw, Meryl, MarkyRy, Jonah, Ariana, Cudi, Timothée, Cate, Medea, Himesh, Perlman, Rob Morgan. This episode became a little bit of a debate with two co-hosts loving the movie and one who wished he loved it a little more, so we had a nice (for the most part) back and forth while also picking apart lots of pieces of the film here and there. Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
It's here, it's breaking records but is it any good? There are 2 answers to this, one is who cares it's gonna make a billion dollars and the other is a resounding Yes. Jeff, having tremendous difficulty with his lifestyle, takes the week off leaving John and Dave to discuss the biggest superhero movie release of the year. As usual, first 15 minutes is spoiler free and you bet we let you know when we get to the spoiler section. Dave gets gushed, John tries to call Marvel to action and somehow Scorsese gets a mention. Spiderman No Way Home is in theaters now starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch.

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave & John discuss our 70 MM screenings of Licorice Pizza, currently in limited release ahead of a nationwide release on Christmas, 2021. Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, which he wrote, directed and co-cinematographered, is an intimate look at a friendship/romance among two young people in LA's San Fernando Valley 1973. The film is cinema, people. It has life, it's lush, it's funny, the cast is amazing, and the Bradley Cooper and Sean Penn cameos, along with a few others, are all amazing. Go see this when you can!

Ghostbusters: Afterlife: New Movie Discussion
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
This week on the pod we discuss Ghostbusters: Afterlife! Most of our hosts loved this movie so we had a fun conversation about the new entry in this strange, sporadic franchise that apparently will continue after this film! If you loved the original and have kids, just like director Jason Reitman (son of OG director, Ivan, or course), go see this movie! It's fun. The kids are the new busters, one of whom was in Stranger Things and It, the other was in I, Tonya and Captain Marvel, have made a hell of an impression. So don't listen to co-host Jeff, listen to your hearts instead.

The Matrix (1999): Should Have Seen That By Now
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
This week Jeff, Dave & John head back to the 90s to stop by the mall, hit up CD World for the Matrix soundtrack, stop by Spencer gifts for some leather/vinyl jackets, hit up PacSun to buy some JNCO Jeans, blast our new Rob Zombie music in our Airwalks to prepare for our re-watch of the revolutionary 1999 film The Matrix, which is available on HBOMax with the rest of the trilogy. The 4th installment, Resurrections, comes out 12/22. After Jeff explains why he hasn't seen this movie since he saw it 25 times when he was 12, the guys explain their re-watch before discussing what aged well, signature shots, casting what-ifs and a fun game to examine some potential plot-holes or things that didn't age well without actually criticizing the movie.

Eternals: New Movie Discussion & Broader MCU Implications
Monday Nov 08, 2021
Monday Nov 08, 2021
This week on the pod, John decided to skip the 4th biggest movie opening of the year to enjoy some fun in the sun, so Dave and Jeff take us to the MCU in a discussion of Eternals. The film is directed by Chloe Zhao and stars Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, a bunch of Game of Thrones dudes, a bunch of people we'll be seeing lots more of like Lauren Ridloff and Barry Keoghan (Jeff pronounced his name wrong on the pod, what an ass, it's Cow-gan), and the movie is good! New mythology, lots of new moving pieces, I can see why critics were suspicious and, you know, critical, but screw them. This is fun and there are a lot of awesome people who's work you'll appreciate. Give it a go.
