Willy's Wonderland starring Nicolas Cage
Thursday Jul 22, 2021
Thursday Jul 22, 2021
This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff pour some beers, ready a drinking game and log on to Hulu for Willy's Wonderland, an 88 minute slasher/comedy/horror-ish genre flick starring Nicolas Cage. There have been many Cage films over the last 10 years. This one, with a budget of $5.5 million and a script that spent years on the Blood List- a list of highly anticipated genre films- was likely a blast to film and a joy to watch. Nic Cage agrees to work an overnight janitorial shift at Willy's Wonderland, a defunct Chuck E. Cheese-esque family fun zone, where he punches and slashes his way through possessed animatronics come to life before they kill the teenage locals come to free him and burn the place down. It's really fun and really free with your paid Hulu subscription service.

Space Jam: A New Legacy
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
This week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John due our best to redeem the new Space Jam movie from those pesky critics, who have been largely underwhelmed by the LeBron James reboot of the 1996 classic starring Michael Jordan. Here, the Looney Tunes are back to help the Bron win a game of basketball under the duress of humanoid-yet-not-real artificial intelligence Al G. Rhythm, played by Don Cheadle, using gaming code stolen from LeBron's son Dom. Lots of hammed nostalgia, ads and WB cross-pros keep this an entertaining flick that currently has a strong 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. We discuss!

F9 The Fast Saga
Saturday Jul 17, 2021
Saturday Jul 17, 2021
Continuing Family Week on the pod, everyone strapped themselves into those comfy recliner chairs at the movies for the roller coaster that is F9 The Fast Saga. Dave and Jeff went to the same cinema for the first time in almost 2 years and it might have got awkward. We cover everything in this episode from the environment of space (or lack thereof), the adjustable laws of physics and the selective nature of magnetism (which seems to make Dave irrationally angry - why is magnetism his trigger?) and how despite all this the escapism of these movies is what brings the crowd.

Black Widow
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff discuss Marvel's newest movie... at least, the most recent MCU feature film, a standalone about Scarlett Johansson's character Black Widow. This film, set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and the infamous Sokovia Accords, takes a look at Natasha Richardson's- I mean Natasha Romanoff's- history with the Red Room, a fictional KGB espionage training program. With help from Florence Pugh, they're gonna try to bring that mother down.

Dr Strangelove: Should Have Seen That By Now
Wednesday Jul 07, 2021
Wednesday Jul 07, 2021
We once again welcome our guest host Jeff Ronan from the And Almost Starring podcast to discuss the gratuitous oversight that neither he nor Dave (keep in mind both these people host MOVIE podcasts) have seen Dr Strangelove. When asks the ultimate question, Jeff sugarcoats it, Dave does not and then we launch into the merits of why everyone should watch this absolute classic.

Superman IV: Was It Really That Bad
Monday Jul 05, 2021
Monday Jul 05, 2021
A long standing suggestion for the Was It Really That Bad, we dive into Superman IV with our special return guest Ryan who ends up trying to moderate a debate he is not prepared for. A random roll decides who is positive and negative and Dave, who can be quite brutal ends up on the positive side. We don't want to say he bulls&*tted his way through this, but he totally bulls*&tted his way through this and John, for the record, was way nicer than he could have been. By the end we've covered the entire original franchise and we dedicate this episode to the memory of Richard Donner (who had nothing to do with this film but started it all with Superman: The Movie) who we found out had passed just before recording.

Reservoir Dogs: Should Have Seen That By Now
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
Thursday Jul 01, 2021
This week on the pod Dave finally gets over his fear of Quentin Tarantino movies by watching Steve Buscemi play dress-up with his friends in Reservoir Dogs! Quentin once worked on a Dolph Lungren workout video and learned from it to make Reservoir Dogs, and Dave was not surprised by that. He liked the movie and John and Jeff enjoyed their re-watches. We also drank some beer! Please like and subscribe to our show. We'd really appreciate it.

Monday Jun 28, 2021
Monday Jun 28, 2021
This week on the pod we talk about The Social Network! Yes, Mark Zuckerberg's authoritarian grip on an online community with 3 billion users has been... polarizing, but does the film hold up? We love to talk about movies so we're rooting for it! Hear how we think it's aged since it's release in 2021 and where David Fincher's vision of Aaron Sorkin's script places this film on the HoF director's acclaimed catalog.

Psycho: Should Have Seen That By Now
Friday Jun 25, 2021
Friday Jun 25, 2021
It was raining, we needed to hide our money, we got off the main rode and checked into the Bates Motel.... We're talking about Psycho! Somehow, one of our co-hosts had never seen the film. John Say, headed to one of the country's best film schools in the fall, opens up about what it was like applying to film school having never seen Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, one of the best movies of all time. He had seen North By Northwest, he loves Rear Window, but Psycho was always a skip. Thankfully, he had Dave and Jeff to help guide him through his first viewing experience with this absolute classic. We discuss the incredible story, oft-overlooked by the famous bits, plot devices and storytelling techniques, all while drinking beers.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss the newest installment of The Conjuring saga, currently in theaters and available on HBOMax through mid-July 2021. On Rotten Tomatoes this movie has a 56% critics score and 86% audience score, which makes us mad. We're a positive criticism podcast, so if you're tired of the critics always hunting for the negative, grab a beer, hang with us and let's have some fun!
This is the first Conjuring movie not directed by James Wan, which features a human(ish) antagonist, but still packed with lots of spirits and supernatural hell we love in the Conjuring/Annabelle/Nun films. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as Ed and Lorraine Warren working a real life case that gained national recognition in 1981 and a popular book in 1983. Think about what Helter Skelter would have been like if Charles Manson had the ability to curse families and summon daemons.... Yeah, I spell 'daemons' with an "ae". I read The Golden Compass and thought it was cool. Directed by Michael Chaves.

Singin' In The Rain with Amy Jo Jackson: Should Have Seen That By Now
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Despite having a BFA in Music Theatre, co-host Jeff had never seen 'Singin' In The Rain'! What a loon! We are once again joined by Amy Jo Jackson, co-host of the 'And Almost Starring' podcast which breaks down the casting of popular movies. Amy Jo previously joined us for our In The Heights episode, has recently written a musical and loves this classic film, so what a perfect guest! We discuss why this movie ages well, the self-aware tone, elegant style, movie magic, how changing times affects art, stars Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor and Jean Hagen, and whether or not this is the greatest movie musical of all time. It's currently available on HBOMax.

In The Heights with Amy Jo Jackson!
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
This week on the pod we are incredibly honored to be joined by Amy Jo Jackson! Amy Jo co-hosts an incredible podcast with partner and former guest host Jeff Ronan called 'And Almost Starring', which breaks down a movie's casting and discusses who almost starred. Amy Jo has recently written a musical, so what a perfect guest for our 'In The Heights' discussion! As always, anytime we say a negative comment about the film, we have to drink! Fortunately, we recorded on a Friday night, not that Amy Jo has weekends at the moment. We discuss being a musical theater lover seeing this prescient piece on the screen in NYC, the stories, the characters, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie is directed by John Chu, written by Pulitzer winner Quiara Alegria Hudes who co-wrote the musical with Lin-Manuel, and stars Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins, Gregory Diaz IV, Olga Merediz, Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Marc Antony and Mateo Gomez, featuring cameos by Christopher Jackson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Patrick Page and more.

Parasite: Should Have Seen That By Now
Friday Jun 11, 2021
Friday Jun 11, 2021
This mid-week episode features Parasite as our 'Should Have Seen That By Now' movie since Dave, Australian native and AMPAS skeptic, decided he couldn't skip his monthly viewing of Solo: A Star Wars Story to see Parasite... for the past 18 months. One thing Dave is really good at though is timeliness. Like, if an episode has to come out and his co-host hasn't posted it, he's on it! If there's a 4-star international juggernaut of a film, however... In all seriousness, John and Jeff re-watched this film to prepare to grill Dave for his life choices and all we could do was talk about how great this movie is. Whether it's your first or last viewing, give it a 2021 look. It's on Hulu and it keeps aging well. Like Dave, who's age surprises everyone except his chiropractor.

A Quiet Place Part II
Monday Jun 07, 2021
Monday Jun 07, 2021
This week Jeff, John and Dave went to the movies! It was good to be back. We saw A Quiet Place Part II, the sequel to 2018's A Quiet Place, written and directed by John Krasinski, starring Krasinski and Emily Blunt. On initial reactions, it would appear Krasinski has done it again! This film takes place after the events of the first film which forced the family to relocate while blind alien predators continue to lurk in the woods using their impeccable hearing to find their prey. While Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou help fill out the incredible cast, the children of Blunt and Krasinski's characters, played by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, steal the show. We discuss and drink beer.

The Toxic Avenger: Was It Really That Bad
Friday Jun 04, 2021
Friday Jun 04, 2021
Was It Really That Bad returns with a vengeance (and new rules) in possibly our most chaotic show. It's debate style and we have no idea who is on which team until we're already live on the episode. For our first attempt, we went back to the 80's and picked Troma royalty The Toxic Avenger. Joined again by our special guest Matt Gilbert from the Matt & Mark Movie Show (who was lucky enough to land on the positive side), we argue whether this deserves its place on the classic pedestal. Buzzers are flying everywhere and no one is playing fair as we debate Was It Really That Bad.

Monday May 31, 2021
Monday May 31, 2021
For this episode we take a cruise down the strip that is American Graffiti. Written and directed by George Lucas and nominated for 5 Oscars, our shameful secret is revealed that NONE of us had seen this. Joined by our special guest host Matt from the Matt & Mark Movie Show we follow rising star Richard Dreyfuss and complete nobody Ronny Howard (kidding... he already had a million credits before doing this) as they drive their way through the most misguided and epic last night before college.

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave & John discuss films from 1962. We had to cut out a segment of David Fincher talking smack about studios while praising Netflix and other streaming services, but that's available on our YouTube page. Just search "The Love of Cinema Podcast" and you'll see our ugly ass faces wearing masks in our picture. We also filmed our 'Baby Jane' segment.
The first film in our discussion is To Kill A Mockingbird- should we continue to read the book and see the film? We then head to What Ever Happened To Baby Jane starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in the movie that inspired FEUD, which was that Ryan Murphy series you may remember. Finally, we try to redeem King Kong vs. Godzilla: was it really that bad?

Monday May 24, 2021
Monday May 24, 2021
This week on the pod we are joined by longtime radio host Jack Daniel (not the alcohol) from Charlotte's k104.7 to discuss Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, which just dropped on Netflix. It's about a zombie army. Well, they try to rob a casino in zombie-infested Las Vegas, so it's a heist film a la Ocean's 11, but re-routing the Game of Throne's season 7 penultimate episode with the plot of Aliens, as co-host Dave points out. And War of the Planet of the Apes. But with two breeds of zombies- super zombies and regular zombies, so Game of Thrones except in the desert. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell and Tig Notaro, who's hilarious.

Citizen Kane: Should Have Seen That By Now
Thursday May 20, 2021
Thursday May 20, 2021
This week on the pod Jeff, Dave and John premier their new segment: Should Have Seen That By Now. It's based on an idea from our friend and sometimes-co-host Ryan who watched well over 300 movies last year and took requests. Out of all those movies he said his favorite was 'Paddington 2' WHICH, segue, unseated 'Citizen Kane' as the #1 ranked movie on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the uncovering of a Chicago Tribune review from 1941, which thought Kane wasn't entertaining. That, along with David Fincher's 'Mank' premiering on Netflix in 2020, and Yankee Jeff and Aussie Dave having never seen the film, made this an interesting time for us to discuss Orson Welles' masterpiece, 'Citizen Kane', available to stream on HBOMax.

After taking a few weeks off, we're back! Hosts John, Dave & Jeff break down our new format before discussing the new film Mortal Kombat, which was released on HBOMax the same day it came out in theaters per WB's 2021 agenda. The film is fun, so we drank some beers and talked about it.
Later in the week we will premier our new segment, Should Have Seen It By Now, with Citizen Kane. In honor of Mank and Paddington 2, Dave and Jeff discuss their first viewing of the film as John tries to roast us. Easy, man.

Lucky week 13 of our Best of Film awards Series starts with Take 2 as our entire live stream had combusted 2 minutes earlier. John might need a new computer and Dave gives Marvel and DC Toxic Fandom a well earned dressing down before we moved on to watching Tom Hanks battle pretty much all of Texas to return a lost girl home in News of the World. We followed that up with a movie that is both heartfelt and a not a little bit terrifying in the way it deals with an aging man losing control of his reality as Anthony Hopkins shows he can still deliver a masterful performance in The Father.

In the 12th week of our Oscars/Razzies series "It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Worst of Film (of 2020)" we ditched the Razzies and doubled up on some Oscar films. With 11 nominations between the two, for a current rental price tag of $26, we got to support some great film makers and see some good movies! After a brief (very brief) discussion of the Snyder Cut, we open up a discussion of Minari and just how incredible and timely this film is. We then discuss Promising Young Woman and just how timely this film is. Is the film as good as its themes, concept, subject matter, cinematography, color palate and the leading performance of it's star- Carey Mulligan? Maybe, just see this movie, it's really important to witness, watch and listen.

In week 10 of our "It Was the Best of Film, It Was the Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie sries, we chose One Night in Miami as our Oscar movie and Hillbilly Elegy as our Razzie movie, even though it also received 2 Oscar noms. First of all, F the razzies to hell. Yes, we're doing segments on it, but Glenn Close? "I Will Not Be Ignored" is up for a Raz- are you out of your godDAMN mind, razzies? Anyway, Regina King was snubbed by the Oscars for her beautifully shot 'One Night in Miami' and Ron Howard's Hillbilly Elegy was not as bad as the Razzies. After 8 weeks of perfect professionalism, it all falls apart in the opening as we launch into week 9 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie episodes like a SpaceX rocket landing. First up is the current heavy hitter on the awards circuit Nomadland, a film that moved us so much we can't even think of a joke about it. Following that we dive into the reimagining of Roald Dahl's The Witches to find out just how much therapy your kid's will need when you put on this cute mousey adventure and leave them unattended. Please give us a follow on the socials! We record live on Twitch and Facebook every Sunday, we drink beer and we respond to hecklers.

Co-host Jeff had some audio issues at the beginning of the pod, but week 8 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" Oscar/Razzie series made it to print with a discussion of Golden Globe winner Judas and the Black Messiah and potential Razzie nominee Mulan. If you haven't seen Judas yet, just do it. Do it. It's on HBOmax. Kaluuya and Stanfield are legends who will be in our lives for 40+ years, as will director Shaka King and producer Ryan Coogler. Mulan is on Disney+. Please give us a follow on the socials! We record live on Twitch and Facebook every Sunday, we drink beer and we respond to hecklers.

Episode 50!! We're so excited to have passed 3,200 downloads as well as many more engagements on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch. Thanks for listening! This episode was week 7 of our "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)" series where we pair a presumed Oscar nominated film with a presumed Razzie nominated film to recap notable works from 2020. Our "Best of Film" entry is the George Clooney-directed/starring Climate Change space "epic?" The Midnight Sky, available to stream on Netflix. While the film will likely gather awards attention for it's Alexandre Desplat score and it's incredible visual effects and cinematography, does the story keep this film from deviating its course (movie reference)? Our "Worst of Film" entry is The New Mutants, which features incredible performances by it's young stars including Anya Taylor-Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton. But did the 3 years of studio and production moves end up haunting this film's story? Intro/The Midnight Sky (0:00) The New Mutants (36:20) Music: soundcloud.com/dasein-artist.
